Boston, MALocal News

Mayor Michelle Wu and Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley recently announced a significant $1 million investment to expand Boston's Digital Literacy Initiative (DigLit), aimed at addressing critical digital literacy gaps in workforce development. This funding will facilitate the next phase, DigLit 2. 0, enhancing 20 local job readiness and occupational training programs with the infrastructure needed for effective digital skills training. The initiative is backed by a Community Project Funding grant secured by Pressley, highlighting the collaboration between local and federal efforts to improve job readiness. The announcement was made at the East Boston YMCA, which plays a vital role in adult education and job training.

Local leaders underscored the necessity of digital skills for accessing employment opportunities in an evolving economy. The expansion is a continuation of successful pilot programs that annually serve 3,500 students and resulted in increased use of digital tools in education. Chief of Worker Empowerment Trinh Nguyen emphasized that digital literacy is essential for economic mobility and access to job opportunities. This initiative reflects Boston's commitment to fostering an inclusive economy where all residents can thrive.
