Office of Youth Engagement and Advancement Announces Annual Youth Lead the Change Voting is Open

Boston, MALocal News

The City of Boston, led by Mayor Michelle Wu, has launched the Youth Lead the Change (YLC) voting initiative, allowing youth aged 14-25 to vote on how to allocate $1 million from the city's capital budget. This program encourages young residents to engage with their communities by selecting from seven project proposals designed to address local needs, such as improving park facilities and expanding free WiFi access. Voting will be available both online and at designated physical locations until May 31, 2025. Over 300 ideas were collected from youth across 23 neighborhoods, demonstrating the diverse voices and needs of Boston’s younger population. Mayor Wu highlighted the initiative's role in uplifting youth voices and fostering civic engagement, while youth council members stressed the importance of having a say in decisions that impact their lives.

The YLC program has been in place since 2014, positioning Boston as a pioneer in youth participatory budgeting. Past successful projects have focused on addressing community disparities and enhancing city infrastructure. This participatory budgeting process not only empowers youth but also equips them with valuable civic skills, ensuring their involvement in shaping the future of their city.
