Mayor Michelle Wu Announces Annual Tax Prep Services Available for Residents

Boston, MALocal News

Mayor Michelle Wu has announced the launch of free tax preparation services for eligible Boston residents earning $70,000 or less, through the Boston Tax Help Coalition. This annual program aims to maximize tax refunds and credits while eliminating the burden of costly tax preparation fees. With over 30 neighborhood tax sites across the city, the Coalition has served nearly 227,000 households since 2001, returning over $400 million in tax refunds and credits. IRS-certified volunteer tax preparers will assist residents in navigating the tax filing process and will help assess eligibility for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which averaged $2,743 for residents in 2024. The initiative not only provides vital financial support but also emphasizes the importance of economic independence for low-to-moderate income individuals and families.

Mayor Wu highlighted the significant savings residents can achieve through these services, encouraging participation. The announcement showcases collaboration among community partners dedicated to enhancing economic stability in Boston. As a critical resource, this program addresses urgent financial needs for thousands of families in the city.
