Route 1A in East Boston partially closed after bus topples light poles, transformers

Boston, MALocal News

A bus collided with a utility pole on Route 1A in East Boston early Monday morning, resulting in significant traffic disruptions and multiple downed light poles and transformers. The accident occurred just after 5:30 a. m. during the busy morning commute, leading to immediate gridlock as Boston and State Police closed the highway in both directions. Chief Mark Raymond of the Boston Fire Department described the chaos, noting that the bus veered into the right lane, taking out several utility poles and causing wires to litter the roadway.

While the northbound lanes were reopened by 1 p. m. , southbound traffic remained halted, creating severe delays for commuters. Two individuals on the bus were transported to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The incident has had a ripple effect on traffic throughout East Boston and around Logan International Airport, prompting officials to advise motorists to seek alternative routes.

The timing of this accident, coinciding with the start of the week, has exacerbated the situation, with commuters facing a challenging journey. Recovery efforts are ongoing as crews work to clear the debris and restore normal traffic flow.
