November Is Youth And Young Adult Homelessness Awareness Month
A resolution reveals that 1 in 30 youth aged 13 to 17 and 1 in 10 young adults aged 18 to 25 in the U. S. will experience homelessness this year. Contributing factors include family rejection, aging out of foster care, and intergenerational poverty. The number of unaccompanied homeless youth rose by 10% from 2023 to 2024, with a significant increase among BIPOC and LGBTQ+ youth.
In Greater Boston, 32. 7% of LGBTQ+ youth of color are unemployed, and 30. 9% face food insecurity. The resolution emphasizes the urgent need for ongoing awareness efforts and acknowledges the work of local organizations. Locally, over 5,000 Boston Public Schools students experienced homelessness in the 2023-2024 school year.
The January 31, 2024, Boston Annual Homelessness Census identified 132 unaccompanied youth, a 17. 9% increase from 2023. Transportation is cited as a major barrier for youth seeking shelter and long-term housing.
