Scam Alert Imposters Posing as Health Benefits and Insurance (HBI)

Boston, MALocal News

The City of Boston issues a warning about fraudulent phone calls targeting employees from scammers impersonating Health Benefits and Insurance (HBI) staff. These scammers aim to collect sensitive information, such as Social Security and Medicare numbers, using caller ID spoofing to appear legitimate. HBI states it will never request personal information like full Social Security numbers or banking details during unsolicited calls. Employees are encouraged to verify any contact by calling HBI directly at 617-635-4570 and report suspicious communications to HBI@boston. gov.

If an employee has shared personal information, they should monitor their credit and consider placing a fraud alert. The City emphasizes the importance of privacy and urges employees to pause, verify, and report any suspicious activity. According to HBI, genuine staff may only verify limited information, reinforcing the need for caution. This alert highlights the ongoing issue of identity theft and the need for vigilance among employees.
