Recovery Campus Proposed for Boston and Surrounding Communities
The Boston City Council approved a resolution prioritizing a recovery campus to tackle public health and safety issues linked to the Long Island Bridge's closure since 2014. The bridge, previously hosting treatment facilities, has faced slow reconstruction progress, with costs now estimated over $1 billion. Despite the City’s FY2026–2030 Capital Plan allocating over $100 million for the bridge and repairs, legal and logistical delays continue to create uncertainty. During a recent off-site hearing, nearly 200 community members voiced concerns about worsening conditions in the Mass and Cass area, including public drug use and violence. They urged immediate action from city and state officials to prioritize recovery services and adopt treatment-first approaches.
The resolution underscores the need for concrete steps to enhance quality of life and provide critical treatment programs. The Council's formal support for the recovery campus reflects growing urgency to address these pressing challenges. The long-standing issues in the area highlight the need for effective solutions to improve public safety and health in Boston.
