MAYOR MICHELLE WU AND OFFICE OF YOUTH ENGAGEMENT AND ADVANCEMENT SHARE IMPACT OF BOSTON AFTER DARK 2025

Boston, MALocal News

This summer, Boston After Dark engaged over 1,500 youth across 23 events, marking a 50% increase from the previous year's attendance of 1,000. The initiative, organized by Mayor Michelle Wu's Office of Youth Engagement, aims to provide safe and fun opportunities for teens aged 14-18 during summer nights. Events included sports tournaments, talent shows, and various activities held at Boston Centers for Youth and Families and YMCA centers. The expansion was influenced by findings from the Youth Speaks Boston survey, which highlighted youth desires for social connection and inclusivity. Mayor Wu praised the initiative's role in enhancing community safety and supporting youth engagement.

The program, which began in response to youth violence in the summer of 2023, aims to address gaps in after-hours engagement. José F. Massó, Chief of Human Services, noted the importance of community partnerships in impacting youth positively. Plans are underway to extend programming into school vacation weeks, creating more opportunities for connection and support.
