Ex-Boston police sergeant pleads not guilty to child rape in Suffolk Superior Court

Paul Downey, a 58-year-old former Boston police sergeant, pleaded not guilty to multiple charges of raping a 14-year-old boy in Suffolk Superior Court. Initially arraigned in Boston Municipal Court, he faces four counts of aggravated rape, two counts of paying for sex with a minor, and two counts of electronically enticing a child for commercial sex. Prosecutors allege Downey communicated with the victim over Snapchat to negotiate payment for sex, meeting twice to engage in sexual acts. Evidence presented includes the victim's Snapchat communications, which traced to Downey's cellphone, and identification of Downey's photo by the victim. Downey, who had a gross salary of $378,849.

25 last year, was placed on administrative leave when the charges emerged and has since retired. Surveillance video reportedly captured vehicles matching Downey's during the alleged incidents. He has been released on bail as the case continues to unfold. The prosecution emphasizes that their evidence extends beyond the victim’s testimony, including digital records linking Downey to the crime.
