Webster man indicted, arrested for allegedly setting Southbridge fire that displaced 12 families

Gerardo Cruz-Rivera, 34, was indicted and arrested for allegedly setting a fire that ravaged two multi-family homes in Southbridge, displacing 12 families. The fire, reported at approximately 3:30 a. m. on November 13, 2024, triggered a response from more than a dozen fire departments. Although all families managed to escape unharmed, one firefighter was hospitalized due to injuries sustained during the firefighting efforts.

Investigators determined the fire was intentionally set at the rear of 5-7 Union Street, leading to a grand jury indictment on September 22. Cruz-Rivera was arraigned in Worcester Superior Court and is being held without bail, with a dangerousness hearing slated for October 1.
