Health Advisory Back Bay Fens Waterway Affected By Cyanobacteria Algae Bloom

Boston, MALocal News

The Boston Public Health Commission has alerted residents about a harmful cyanobacteria algae bloom in a waterway near the Museum of Fine Arts. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health conducted assessments and found toxin levels exceeding safety guidelines for recreational waters. Residents are advised to avoid all contact with the water and surrounding areas, as exposure can lead to health issues for both humans and pets. Symptoms from contact may include skin irritation, gastrointestinal issues, and in severe cases, neurological problems. The bloom, which thrives in warm weather, may last for weeks, and the DPH will continue to monitor the situation.

The advisory will be lifted only after two rounds of samples show safe toxin levels. For immediate concerns, residents can contact the Boston Public Health Commission's Environmental and Occupational Health Division. More details and a location map are available on the commission's website.
