Boston Public Health Commission Announces First Case Of West Nile Virus Detected In the City
The Boston Public Health Commission confirmed a Boston resident in his 50s as the first human case of West Nile Virus for the year. He is currently under treatment and showing improvement. Last month, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health elevated the risk level for West Nile Virus in Boston to “high” due to evidence of infected mosquitoes in the area. Residents are encouraged to take protective measures, especially those over 50 and immunocompromised individuals. Precautions include avoiding outdoor activities during peak mosquito hours and using EPA-approved insect repellents.
Dr. Bisola Ojikutu highlighted the need for vigilance against mosquito-borne illnesses as outdoor activities continue into the fall. Most individuals infected with West Nile Virus do not show symptoms, but some may experience severe illness. Public health officials stress the importance of contacting healthcare providers for those exhibiting severe symptoms.
