Ban on two-wheeled food delivery vehicles gets cold reception in City Council
The Boston City Council is debating a ban on mopeds and scooters used by third-party food delivery drivers following public safety concerns. Councilor Ed Flynn proposed the ban, but it faced significant opposition and was referred to the Committee on Government Operations for further discussion. Flynn's proposal aims to amend an ordinance requiring delivery companies to secure permits and share safety data with the city. He highlighted a recent fatal incident involving an e-bike, criticizing the current lack of regulation as a "Wild West mentality. " Opponents, including Councilor Henry Santana, argue that the ban could endanger the livelihoods of low-income workers dependent on delivery jobs.
Councilor Enrique Pepén emphasized that the existing ordinance has yet to be implemented and called for improved enforcement and coordination with the state. Councilor Julia Mejia suggested focusing on holding delivery companies accountable rather than penalizing drivers. The council continues to seek solutions that enhance safety while supporting the delivery workforce.
