Boston, MALocal News

City officials celebrated the groundbreaking of a new mixed-use development at 55 Hudson Street in Chinatown, which will provide 110 affordable homes and a permanent branch of the Boston Public Library. Mayor Michelle Wu emphasized the project’s significance in meeting community needs and supporting local families, stating, “55 Hudson Street will bring new affordable housing units and a vibrant library branch to Chinatown. ” The development will consist of 66 affordable rental apartments and 44 homeownership units, located above a two-story, 17,000-square-foot library. Representative Aaron Michlewitz highlighted the urgency of the project, expressing gratitude for the collaboration that made it possible. Sheila Dillon, Chief of Housing, described the initiative as an investment in the long-term stability of Chinatown, creating diverse housing options.

The new library branch will feature over 7,000 square feet for collections and reading, along with community spaces. This development fulfills a decades-long desire for a permanent library, as the neighborhood has not had one in nearly 70 years. The project aims to strengthen community ties and ensure that Chinatown remains affordable for future generations.
