Mayor Michelle Wu emphasized that the laureate will serve as a beacon of creative and social impact, inspiring youth and communities alike. The laureate will perform at civic events, lead public workshops, and collaborate with current Poet Laureate Emmanuel Oppong-Yeboah. Parker-Vincent Alva, the current laureate, has made significant contributions during his tenure, including releasing a chapbook and participating in numerous literary events.

Since the program's launch in 2020, it has empowered three young poets, showcasing the transformative power of the arts in civic life.
