Mayor Wu Announces Call for Bostons Next Youth Poet Laureate
Boston is now accepting applications for its next Youth Poet Laureate, a two-year role commencing in January 2026. The initiative, created with support from various literary organizations, aims to amplify youth voices through poetry and foster community engagement. Mayor Michelle Wu emphasized that the laureate will serve as a beacon of creative and social impact, inspiring youth and communities alike. The laureate will perform at civic events, lead public workshops, and collaborate with current Poet Laureate Emmanuel Oppong-Yeboah. Parker-Vincent Alva, the current laureate, has made significant contributions during his tenure, including releasing a chapbook and participating in numerous literary events.
Since the program's launch in 2020, it has empowered three young poets, showcasing the transformative power of the arts in civic life. Alondra Bobadilla, the inaugural laureate, noted the program's impact on her as a platform for meaningful connection and self-expression. The ideal candidate will be an advocate for youth voices, using poetry to inspire and uplift the city's young residents.
