Block of Harvard Square will be permanently closed to traffic, European-style

Boston, MALocal News

The Cambridge City Council approved a motion to permanently close Lower Bow Street in Harvard Square to car traffic, allowing for outdoor dining spaces for local establishments starting in spring. Transportation Commissioner Brooke McKenna highlighted that the street closure during construction had not impacted traffic safety or functionality. The plan aims to replicate the successful outdoor dining experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. City Councilor Patty Nolan advocates for automatic bollards to permit delivery access while addressing the city's maintenance concerns. Deputy City Manager Kathy Watkins noted that simpler solutions may be more effective than the complex bollard system.

Nolan plans to investigate successful implementations of these bollards in European cities. The Harvard Square Business Association and local businesses have expressed support for the initiative, aiming to create a vibrant outdoor dining atmosphere. The city will continue to work with stakeholders to finalize the pedestrianization plans.
