Boston Parks and Recreation Department Receives Federal Grant for Gravestone Conservation at Dorchester North Burying Ground
The Boston Parks and Recreation Department received a federal grant for the conservation of approximately 150 gravestones at Dorchester North Burying Ground. Established in 1633, this site is one of the oldest burial grounds in the United States and holds significant historical value. The funding, which includes a Semiquincentennial grant from the National Park Service, will aid in stabilizing and restoring endangered gravestones. Notable individuals buried at Dorchester North include colonial governors William Stoughton and William Tailer, as well as Revolutionary War soldiers. This restoration project will ensure that the history of Dorchester remains accessible to future generations.
The initiative highlights the importance of preserving local history and educating descendants about their heritage. Kelly Thomas from the Historic Burying Grounds Initiative is the contact for inquiries about the project. The conservation work signifies a commitment to maintaining the legacy of one of Boston's oldest landmarks.
