Kite surfer rescued off Graves Light in Boston Harbor after chance encounter

Boston, MALocal News

Kite surfer Faraz Firoozabadi faced a dangerous situation in Boston Harbor as Hurricane Erin created large swells. He became disoriented about eight miles from his starting point in Revere, struggling to manage the cold in his wetsuit. Utilizing his Apple Watch, a birthday gift from his wife, he called 911, prompting his family to communicate his position to the authorities. Captain Matt Cooney, while on his boat for ship navigation, spotted Firoozabadi and rendered assistance. "He was OK – just tired, shaking when he came aboard," Cooney reported.

Firoozabadi expressed profound gratitude for his rescue, stating, "It's good to be alive and tell the story. " Situations like these underscore the dangers of kite surfing during adverse weather conditions. The Coast Guard's response and the quick thinking of Firoozabadi and his family contributed to a successful rescue.
