Police body camera footage shows arrest of Rhode Island assistant attorney general

Boston, MALocal News

Assistant Attorney General Devon Hogan Flanagan of Rhode Island was arrested for allegedly disturbing the peace at a Newport restaurant. Upon police arrival, Flanagan insisted officers turn off their body cameras, stating that protocol required it if a citizen asked. Officers determined she and her companion were trespassing after consulting restaurant staff and subsequently arrested them. Flanagan, in a pink dress, asserted her professional title while being handcuffed, saying, "I'm an AG. " She faces charges of willful trespass, and her companion faces additional charges for resisting arrest.

The incident was recorded by police body cameras, which Newport police maintain should only be turned off at the request of victims or witnesses. The Attorney General's office is reviewing Flanagan's arrest but has not provided additional comments on the matter. This situation raises questions about the conduct of public officials and the policies surrounding police body camera usage.
