MassDOT planning a pedestrian and bike path over the Charles near Museum of Science

Boston, MALocal News

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) plans to construct a $302 million pedestrian and bike path over the Charles River, connecting Boston and Cambridge near the Museum of Science. This initiative follows a feasibility study initiated by the museum, which received a $200,000 grant in 2022. The project will feature a movable bridge to ensure uninterrupted marine traffic and off-road multi-use paths for pedestrians and cyclists. Additionally, three islands will be developed to attract wildlife and provide educational opportunities, enhancing the museum's programming. MassDOT will engage neighbors and stakeholders to identify funding sources and finalize the project timeline.

The planned path aims to improve transit for non-motorized users, contributing to safer travel in the area. The accessible island could include an educational boardwalk and an event lawn, creating an inviting entrance for museum visitors. As the project is in early development stages, further community engagement is anticipated.
