Health Advisory Sprague Pond In Hyde Park Affected By Cyanobacteria Algae

Boston, MALocal News

The Boston Public Health Commission has issued a health advisory warning residents to avoid contact with Sprague Pond in Hyde Park due to a dangerous cyanobacteria algae bloom. Testing revealed cyanobacteria levels exceeding Massachusetts Department of Public Health guidelines, indicating potential health risks for humans and pets. Residents should refrain from swimming, fishing, or allowing their dogs to enter the water, as exposure can lead to gastrointestinal symptoms in people and severe neurological effects in dogs. Symptoms of exposure in pets may include vomiting and convulsions, with serious cases leading to death. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health will continue to monitor the algae levels and will conduct sampling to assess when it is safe to lift the advisory.

Algae blooms typically occur during summer months, and the DPH requires two consecutive weeks of safe testing results to remove the warning. For further inquiries, residents can reach out to the Boston Public Health Commission's Environmental and Occupational Health Division. This advisory underscores the importance of public health awareness regarding environmental hazards in recreational waters.
