City Invests in Neighborhood Pools
Boston's investment of $54. 5 million from 2025 to 2029 aims to modernize and enhance public pools, addressing facilities built in the 1970s. Among the completed renovations are the BCYF Clougherty Pool, which reopened in July 2024 with a new lap pool and accessible facilities, and the BCYF Mattahunt Community Center Pool, which welcomed visitors in spring 2024 after extensive upgrades. Earl Foulk, a 60-year resident, expressed his pride in seeing the community's advocacy pay off, noting the center's importance for families. The BCYF Paris Street Pool in East Boston, reopened in July 2023, features updated heating and filtration systems and offers free aquatic programs for residents.
Each pool caters to various community needs, including swim lessons and adaptive swim hours. These projects reflect Boston's commitment to providing affordable recreational opportunities and addressing heat resiliency challenges. The City’s investments align with the goals outlined in PLAN: Mattapan, PLAN: East Boston, and PLAN: Charlestown, promoting healthy lifestyles among residents. Community members have actively engaged in supporting these renovations, highlighting their significance in local life.
