The 2025 WalletHub survey has once again placed Massachusetts at the top as the best state to live in the U. S. , primarily due to its outstanding education and healthcare systems. The state has a high school graduation rate of 90% and an insured population of 97. 4%, ranking first in both categories.

Additionally, Massachusetts ranks third for public transportation access and has one of the lowest crime rates nationwide. New Hampshire follows closely at seventh place, recognized for its fifth-best homeownership rate and low poverty levels. Maine also makes the top 20 at 13, noted for its high homeownership and low crime rates. When evaluating states, WalletHub Analyst Chip Lupo emphasizes the importance of financial factors like cost of living and job availability. In stark contrast, New Mexico ranks last due to its high poverty and crime rates.

The survey utilized 51 indicators of livability to determine these rankings.
