The City of Boston to Celebrate 42nd Anniversary of New Edition
Mayor Michelle Wu announced a series of celebratory events on August 30 to honor New Edition, the legendary R&B group formed in Roxbury in 1978. The festivities will feature a street naming ceremony, a community block party, and the official declaration of “New Edition Day” in Boston. Wu remarked on the group's profound influence on local culture and the music industry, inviting community members to participate in the celebrations. Over their 40-year career, New Edition has achieved remarkable success, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and induction into the Black Music Hall of Fame. Members expressed their deep connection to Boston, with Ricky Bell stating that future generations will benefit from the recognition.
The events aim to strengthen community ties across Boston neighborhoods, showcasing the group's lasting impact. The celebration also reiterates the loyalty of their fanbase, affectionately known as #NE4LIFERS. This initiative not only honors New Edition's contributions but also reinforces Boston's cultural identity.
