Mayor Michelle Wu Announces Welcome Home Boston, Phase 3, Provides Progress Report On Homeownership Programs

Boston, MALocal News

Mayor Michelle Wu announced phase three of the Welcome Home, Boston program, which aims to create over 30 new homes for first-time middle-income buyers on 12 City-owned parcels. The initiative will focus on neighborhoods including Hyde Park, Roslindale, Dorchester, and Roxbury, encouraging developers to employ efficient construction methods to reduce costs and timelines. Wu emphasized that homeownership is a critical tool for building generational wealth and strengthening communities. The program specifically supports BIPOC developers, contributing to efforts to close the racial wealth gap in Boston. Previous phases have successfully developed 144 homes, with many currently under construction.

The BPDA Board will vote on the release of a request for proposals this Thursday, marking a significant step in addressing the housing shortage. Sheila Dillon, Chief of Housing, underscored the administration's commitment to increasing homeownership rates through affordable housing initiatives. The program aligns with the Office of Black Male Advancement's mission to enhance wealth-building opportunities for Black residents in Boston.
