7 Chinese nationals charged in alleged multi-million-dollar money laundering and trafficking operation in Mass.

Seven Chinese nationals have been charged with human trafficking and running a multi-million dollar marijuana growing operation in Massachusetts and Maine. Federal prosecutors allege that the defendants smuggled individuals into the U. S. to work in illegal grow houses situated in residential neighborhoods, where they produced and distributed kilogram-sized quantities of marijuana. U.

S. Attorney Leah Foley emphasized that the operation exploited the immigration system for personal gain, turning homes into hubs for criminal activity. Six of the defendants were arrested, while one remains at large. They face charges including conspiracy to manufacture and distribute marijuana, along with multiple counts of money laundering. Prosecutors revealed that the grow houses began operating in January 2020, and significant cash and luxury items were seized during investigations.

If convicted, the defendants could receive sentences ranging from three to twenty years in prison, depending on the charges. The case underscores ongoing issues related to illegal drug trafficking and human smuggling in the region.
