Global Partners is pressing the state to reverse deal over MassDOT service plazas

Boston, MALocal News

Global Partners is contesting a Massachusetts decision to award control of 18 highway service plazas to Applegreen, arguing that it will cost taxpayers millions. The contract, approved by the MassDOT Board, centers on Applegreen's $750 million investment for renovations, while Global Partners projected $375 million more in rent revenue but offered a lower capital investment. MassDOT Secretary Monica Tibbits-Nutt stated that Applegreen's proposal would modernize facilities and improve visitor experiences. Despite Global's appeals for public support, the decision remains unchanged, with only the governor capable of overturning it. Applegreen has pledged to transform the service plazas within a three-year timeline, partnering with Suffolk Construction.

They plan to incorporate over 700 electric vehicle charging stations, reflecting the growing demands of future travelers. The state seeks completion of these renovations by 2028, marking a significant update since the last renovations in the 1950s. This development highlights the ongoing competition between local and international companies in Massachusetts infrastructure projects.
