Mass. officials raise alarm over ICEs makeshift detention center in Burlington

Boston, MALocal News

Massachusetts lawmakers have raised alarms over the conditions at an ICE facility in Burlington, where immigrants reportedly face severe overcrowding and inadequate resources. Detainees lack sufficient food and medical care, with many forced to sleep on concrete floors under constant lights. The facility, initially intended for short-term holds, has become overwhelmed, drawing scrutiny after the detention of a Milford teen for six nights. In response, lawmakers sent a letter to the Trump administration seeking clarification on the facility's operations and conditions. They highlight the urgency of the situation as ICE implements arrest quotas, increasing pressure on field offices.

While ICE maintains that conditions are adequate and that detainees are rarely held long-term, local officials demand increased transparency. The letter was sent to ICE's acting director and field office director, both of whom have been central to the increased enforcement in Massachusetts. All members of the Massachusetts congressional delegation signed the letter, emphasizing the importance of addressing these concerns.
