On June 2, 2025, the Bloomington Police Department swore in eleven new officers, the largest group in over 35 years. This initiative results from the city's commitment to enhancing public safety and improving officer recruitment and retention. Among the new officers, six are already certified in Indiana, while five transferred from other law enforcement agencies, including the South Bend and Indianapolis police departments. One officer rejoined the force after a 21. 5-year retirement, showcasing the department's appeal.

Mayor Kerry Thomson emphasized community safety as a sacred responsibility and praised the dedication of law enforcement professionals. The Thomson administration also proposed converting the former IU Health property into a new police headquarters, aimed at improving facilities and service.
