Bloomington Celebrates Arbor Day with Tree Planting and Arboretum Designation

Bloomington marked Arbor Day on April 25 with a tree planting event in Olcott Park, where over 40 volunteers participated in planting 15 new trees. Mayor Kerry Thomson and Urban Forester Haskell Smith planted a ceremonial tulip tree, demonstrating proper planting techniques. The city has been recognized as a Tree City USA for 41 consecutive years, highlighting its commitment to urban forestry. Additionally, Bryan Park received a Level 1 Accredited Arboreta designation from ArbNet, acknowledging its significant tree collection. The park is home to nearly 400 trees of 60 different species, including a notable American yellowwood.

Parks and Recreation actively treats several ash trees in the park to protect them from the emerald ash borer.
