Statement from Mayor Kerry Thomson on the Citys Fiber Project, the Dissolution of AEG, and GigaBitNow Installation

Bloomington, INLocal News

Mayor Kerry Thomson recently addressed the ongoing challenges of Bloomington's fiber project, initiated as a public-private partnership in 2022. The project, aimed at enhancing high-speed internet access, has faced significant setbacks due to management issues at Atlantic Engineering Group (AEG), which has now dissolved. A revolving door of executives led to delayed repairs and violations of safety standards, culminating in AEG's bankruptcy in early 2025. The city has completed about 50% of the network, reaching over 4,000 homes, but much of the work requires correction to meet safety and quality standards. Currently, the city has paused new installations while remediation efforts are prioritized, with a focus on holding partners accountable.

Mayor Thomson emphasized the importance of digital equity, stating that the broadband initiative is meant to benefit every resident. The city is also looking into AEG's bond funds to assist with repairs and keep the project moving forward. This commitment to quality and accountability reflects the administration's dedication to ensuring that the project serves the community effectively.
