Parks and Recreation Secures Grant to Bring Physical Activity Education to Youth in Afterschool Program
Bloomington Parks and Recreation has secured a $13,000 grant to implement the "Let's Move! " physical activity education program for elementary students enrolled in the Banneker Afterschool program. This initiative aims to combat health disparities by providing resources like tennis shoes, T-shirts, and water bottles to 51 youth at Fairview Elementary School, encouraging them to stay active. Developed and facilitated by seniors from the Indiana University School of Public Health, the program includes engaging physical education activities that adhere to CDC guidelines recommending at least 60 minutes of daily physical activity for children. Shelby Drake, the Health and Wellness Coordinator, highlighted the critical links between limited access to sports and negative health outcomes, stressing the need for safe, accessible exercise programs for youth.
The program is funded by a Youth Adolescent Physical Activity grant from the Indiana Department of Health, which supports safe and engaging physical activity education. "Let's Move! " is free for participants and collaborates with local organizations to offer snacks, homework help, and transportation for students. The program's success will lead into Spring 2025, with remaining funds supporting bike safety education at Banneker Camp, further promoting active lifestyles among youth. This initiative not only fosters physical health but also builds essential skills for lifelong fitness.
