City of Bloomington to Reinstall All-Way Stop Control at Key 7th Street Intersections to Improve Safety

Bloomington, INLocal News

The City of Bloomington is poised to enhance roadway safety by reinstating all-way stop control at four key intersections on 7th Street, including Morton, Washington, Lincoln, and Grant Streets, with installation commencing the week of March 3, 2025. This decision is the result of a data-driven analysis of traffic patterns and crash reports, coupled with valuable feedback from stakeholders such as community leaders and the Bloomington Police Department. City Engineer Andrew Cibor highlighted the initiative's goal to ensure safe navigation for all users—drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, and transit riders—given the complexities introduced by prior traffic modifications. Implemented via a 180-Day Order, this temporary measure addresses a documented pattern of crashes while also responding to the ongoing challenges posed by the bike lane closure due to the Poplars redevelopment project. A similar approach at the intersection of 7th and Dunn Street in April 2023 had already demonstrated significant success in reducing crash frequency.

The City of Bloomington will continue to assess traffic conditions post-implementation to determine the long-term effectiveness of these changes. All road users are encouraged to remain vigilant and adhere to traffic laws during this transition. This initiative underscores the City’s commitment to fostering a safer transportation environment for its residents.
