City of Bloomington Rate Proposal Prioritizes Long-Term Safety and Reliability

Bloomington, INLocal News

The City of Bloomington Utilities (CBU) is initiating a water rate adjustment proposal to enhance infrastructure resilience and service reliability. This move follows a comprehensive cost-of-service study, completed in early 2025, which used smart meter data for precise customer usage assessments. Mayor Kerry Thomson highlighted that access to clean water is a vital public health responsibility, underscoring the plan's aim to maintain community connections. Public meetings to discuss the proposed rates will take place on August 25, August 29, and September 8, 2025, offering residents opportunities for feedback. If the Utilities Services Board approves the proposal, the new rate structure will be implemented in mid-to-late 2026.

CBU prioritizes upgrades to the Monroe Water Treatment Plant, reflecting the need for comprehensive improvements after 60 years of service. Additionally, the construction of a new service center at the former Winston Thomas wastewater treatment plant addresses current facility limitations. The detailed project list supporting this rate adjustment is accessible in CBU’s Capital Improvement Plan.
