Lone survivor of fatal climbing accident describes ordeal
A 38-year-old man from Renton survived a harrowing 400-foot fall during a climbing accident in the North Cascades, which resulted in the tragic deaths of three fellow climbers. The accident occurred on Sunday when their anchor pulled out while rappelling down a steep gully. The lone survivor lost consciousness for several hours and awoke with serious injuries, including internal bleeding and head trauma. After regaining his senses, he managed to disentangle himself and navigate back to his car, which took eight hours. He then drove to a payphone to call for help.
The three climbers who perished were friends of the survivor and were considered fairly experienced in climbing. This incident underscores the inherent risks associated with climbing in remote and rugged environments. Local authorities are likely to review safety protocols for climbers in the area following this tragic event.
