Department of Labor and Industries expands rule on equal pay and other workers protections in Washington state
The Equal Pay and Opportunities Act in Washington State expanded its protections on July 1, ensuring equal pay across various demographics, including gender, sexual orientation, race, immigration status, and physical ability. The Washington State Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) announced this change, emphasizing that it addresses the state's ranking as sixth in the U. S. for gender pay gaps in 2023. The updated criteria for determining similar jobs now consider skills, effort, and responsibilities rather than solely on gender.
Additionally, changes set to take effect on July 27 will restrict the requirement of a driver's license for job applicants unless driving is a necessary function of the job. Employers will also need to disclose wage information and benefits in job listings, impacting businesses with 15 or more employees. These measures aim to enhance workplace equity and transparency, fostering a more inclusive labor market. L&I's announcement highlights a commitment to improving worker protections and addressing systemic pay disparities. The initiative represents a significant step toward achieving fair compensation for all workers in Washington State.
