Deadline approaches for property tax payments in Whatcom County

Bellingham, WALocal News

The Whatcom County Treasurer’s Office has set April 30 as the deadline for property owners to make their first half property tax payments. To avoid incurring penalties, payments must be postmarked or received by this date; otherwise, a penalty of at least 1% will apply each month starting May 1. Property owners can choose from several payment methods, including online, by phone, mail, drop box, or in-person at the Treasurer’s Office. However, online payments are not postmarked and will be considered late if received after the deadline. Eligible property owners, such as those over 60 years old or retired due to disability, may qualify for a property tax exemption if their income is $52,000 or less.

For assistance, individuals can reach out to the Whatcom County Assessor’s office at (360) 778-5050. The article emphasizes the importance of timely payments to avoid financial penalties, which can accumulate quickly. The Treasurer’s Office encourages property owners to verify their tax statements online through the Whatcom County website.
