Little Squalicum Pier now open to the public

Bellingham, WALocal News

The Little Squalicum Pier in Bellingham, Washington, has officially opened to the public, making history as the longest public pier in the state. Spanning 1,248 feet, this pier was originally built over a century ago for industrial use, specifically to transport cement products via rail. In November 2021, Heidelberg Materials donated the pier to the city, which subsequently invested $1. 6 million in improvements funded by the Greenways Levy. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance community access to the waterfront, providing a scenic viewpoint of Bellingham Bay.

Mayor Kim Lund highlighted the pier's significance in promoting equitable access to the Salish Sea, stating it offers a new way for residents to engage with their environment. Scheduled for a public celebration on April 26, the city encourages attendees to walk or bike, as parking is limited. This project aligns with longstanding city plans, including the Little Squalicum Park Master Plan adopted in 2010. The pier's opening is expected to foster community interaction and recreational opportunities, solidifying its role as a vital public asset.
