Bellingham, WALocal News

The upcoming public comment period for the Treoil Industries cleanup site in Ferndale, WA, will begin on March 24, 2025, and extend through April 22, 2025. The Washington State Department of Ecology has released information stating that documents regarding the site will be available for public review. This 3. 5-acre site, located on Aldergrove Road, has a troubled history, having been used for paper product manufacturing for decades. It was placed on the Contaminated Site List due to numerous hazardous spills dating back to the late 1980s.

Two prior cleanup efforts in 2017 and 2022 successfully removed nearly 200,000 gallons of oil, costing over $4. 3 million in total. In 2023, the owners faced a hefty $900,000 fine from Ecology for non-compliance with hazardous waste laws. The community is encouraged to engage in the review process as Ecology proposes a third cleanup effort. The public's feedback will play a crucial role in shaping the final cleanup plan for this environmentally impacted site.
