WTA seeks public input on proposed fare increase

Bellingham, WALocal News

The Whatcom Transportation Authority (WTA) plans to increase bus fares, the first adjustment since 2008, due to rising operational costs. The proposal includes a fixed-route bus fare of $2 and a daily fare cap of $6, doubling the current rate. WTA seeks community input through a public hearing on December 4, 2025, where residents can attend in person or join via Zoom. Additionally, a virtual feedback session is scheduled for November 24 at noon. Notably, riders aged 18 and under will continue to ride for free, ensuring access for younger residents.

The fare increase reflects WTA's response to economic pressures and aims to sustain service quality. If the proposal receives approval, the new fares will take effect in fall 2026. This change highlights the agency's efforts to balance financial sustainability with community needs.
