Whatcom County receives over 1 million in state funds for county-wide upgrades
Whatcom County secured over $1 million in state funding aimed at enhancing community facilities and outdoor spaces. The state Recreation and Conservation Office announced a total of more than $67 million in grants statewide, with Whatcom County receiving about $1. 5 million for six projects. The largest portion of the funding will reimburse the Parks and Recreation Department for purchasing the Carrasco property, nearly 40 acres of land near Acme, which will serve as a future trailhead connecting to Nesset Farm and South Fork Park. Megan Duffy, director of the Recreation and Conservation Office, noted the critical nature of this investment for community outdoor enjoyment and environmental protection.
Furthermore, three additional grants were awarded to the Mount Baker Ranger District to enhance staffing and improve trail conditions. The Nooksack Valley School District is also receiving funds to convert its grass athletics field to artificial turf, promoting better playing conditions. This comprehensive approach to funding reflects a commitment to enhancing recreational infrastructure and preserving natural spaces in Whatcom County. Such initiatives are essential for fostering community engagement and environmental stewardship.
