Unionized healthcare workers in Bellingham ratify new contract
Unionized healthcare workers at PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center ratified a new contract on August 15, following ten months of stalled negotiations and a five-day strike in May. The SEIU Healthcare 1199NW union reported that the new deal includes annual pay increases of 14% to nearly 34% over four years, addressing long-standing wage concerns. Union member Ramon Castellanos emphasized that the contract demonstrates their collective strength and efforts in fighting for better conditions. The agreement also includes improvements in benefits, workplace protections, and stronger union rights.
The union represents more than 900 service workers, lab assistants, and imaging technicians at PeaceHealth. Community support was instrumental in the negotiations, with locals participating in petitions and donations to assist workers. This contract signifies a major advancement for healthcare workers in Whatcom County, enhancing their livelihoods and work environment. The improvements are expected to positively impact both workers and residents in the area.
