Environmental groups call on Whatcom County to take a closer look at Ferndale energy facility
Environmental groups are urging Whatcom County to reevaluate operations at the AltaGas Ferndale Terminal, which stores and exports liquefied petroleum gas. The company has submitted applications for permits to build a new enclosed ground flare and address previously unpermitted projects. The county recently issued a Mitigated Determination of Non-Significance, concluding that the projects do not pose significant environmental risks. Friends of the San Juans is advocating for a full Environmental Impact Statement, citing concerns over rising vessel traffic in the Salish Sea that could threaten endangered Southern Resident orcas. “An EIS is the only tool that can fully evaluate cumulative impacts,” stated Lovel Pratt, the group's Marine Protection and Policy Director.
The coalition emphasizes the need for a thorough review to safeguard marine life and community health. Public comments regarding the proposed projects are being accepted until September 17 at 4 p. m. via email to Whatcom County. These developments reflect ongoing tensions between energy operations and environmental protection in the region.
