Work at Padden Creek fish passage project could extend into overnight hours
Bellingham contractors are seeking to extend working hours for the Padden Creek fish passage project into overnight shifts to expedite essential tasks. Currently, Faber Construction operates from 7 a. m. to 10 p. m.
, aiming to complete in-water work before the September 30 deadline set by the state Department of Ecology. Public Works Director Joel Pfundt noted that while Faber believes it can meet the deadline without nighttime work, the extension would provide an important backup option. The project has already faced delays due to two separate fuel spills from a faulty pump, complicating timelines. The Public Works and Natural Resources Committee has approved the noise ordinance request, enabling the contractor to proceed with overnight work if necessary. This request will be reviewed by the City Council on Monday night for final approval.
Meeting the deadline is crucial to avoid significant project delays, which could extend completion by nearly a full year. The decision could impact local fish populations and the surrounding ecology, emphasizing the project’s importance.
