Bellingham Public Schools proposes levies to address federal budget cuts

Bellingham, WALocal News

Bellingham Public Schools (BPS) is urging the community to support two levies in the upcoming November election to mitigate severe federal funding cuts. The supplemental operations levy is projected to raise $4 million annually, which is essential for stabilizing the district's budget. The facilities maintenance levy, lasting six years, aims to generate about $11 million each year for necessary repairs, such as roof replacements and HVAC upgrades. BPS faces an estimated loss of $750,000 in annual funds due to proposed cuts in the federal budget. Furthermore, the district plans to eliminate 25 full-time positions, exacerbating a projected $15 million budget shortfall.

These proposed levies are crucial for maintaining educational quality and infrastructure in Bellingham. The district's financial challenges underscore the urgency of community support to ensure continued educational services. As the election approaches, BPS emphasizes the importance of these measures for the future of its schools.
