Women nearing menopause drive GLP-1 boom
Texas women have seen a significant increase in GLP-1 drug prescriptions, rising from 0. 6% in 2020 to 4. 34% in 2024, while men’s usage grew from 0. 66% to 3. 39%.
This disparity highlights a shift in focus on weight loss, with 18. 6% of women prescribed GLP-1s for that purpose, compared to 9. 3% of men. Family physician Beth Oller emphasized that many women, particularly those approaching menopause, are turning to these medications to manage weight effectively. Women aged 40 to 64 have been the primary users of GLP-1 prescriptions since 2019, while senior men have been the top male demographic.
The drugs function by mimicking hormones that regulate blood sugar and promote fullness. This trend reflects a growing awareness and demand for women's health solutions amid changing body dynamics with age. Oller noted that traditional weight loss methods often fall short for women experiencing hormonal changes. The data from FAIR Health underscores the importance of addressing these evolving health needs.
