Atlanta Food Bank reports 60 increase in demand over past 3 years

Atlanta, GALocal News

The Atlanta Community Food Bank reports a staggering 60% rise in meal demand over the past three years, signaling an escalating food insecurity crisis in Georgia. A Feeding America study reveals that one in five children and one in ten seniors are currently facing hunger in the state. This issue is particularly severe in the South, which houses nearly 90% of counties with high food insecurity rates. Alarmingly, over 57% of Georgians do not meet the criteria for federal assistance programs like SNAP. Sarah Fonder-Kristy, Chief Development Officer of the food bank, stated that economic pressures and inflation exacerbate the situation, impacting families and children's well-being.

The food bank collaborates with numerous partner agencies to support affected families across the region. Residents in need can text "FIND FOOD" to 888-976-2232 or access the Food Pantry Map online for assistance. The Atlanta Community Food Bank's outreach underscores the urgent need for community support in addressing food insecurity.
