Alpharetta preschools license revoked after 1-year-old boy choked on a piece of mango, died

Atlanta, GALocal News

The Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL) has revoked the license of Little Sunshine’s Playhouse and Preschool in Alpharetta following the heartbreaking death of 1-year-old Juan Martin, who choked on a piece of mango. The incident took place on December 20 during breakfast, and despite being rushed to the hospital, the child succumbed to his injuries five days later. A thorough investigation revealed serious violations, including insufficient staff supervision and improper food preparation practices that failed to account for children's age and eating abilities. DECAL's ruling stated that the preschool demonstrated "intentional and reckless disregard" for the health and safety of its children. The facility has been given 10 days to appeal the decision but must remain closed during this period.

Juan Martin's family expressed their sorrow, highlighting their son as a cherished light in their lives and calling for justice in light of the tragedy. This incident underscores the critical need for stringent safety measures in childcare facilities, particularly regarding food preparation and supervision. The preschool's ongoing challenges with staffing and oversight had previously been documented by DECAL, raising further concerns about its operational standards.
