Yakima City Council Approves New Contract with Humane Society for Enhanced Animal Shelter Services
In a significant move towards improving animal welfare, the Yakima City Council approved a new contract with the Yakima Humane Society during their meeting on April 1, 2025. This contract allows the city to drop off up to 45 dogs each month at a cost of $275 per dog, which includes comprehensive medical care while the dogs reside at the shelter. The agreement aims to address ongoing discussions about community animal control and responsible pet ownership. During the meeting, Councilmember Rick Glenn raised concerns about the ownership transfer of animals after a certain period. Councilmember Janice Deccio underscored the potential benefits of microchipping dogs for better identification and community safety.
The Chief of Police clarified that any dog unclaimed within three months would become the property of the Humane Society, which would handle its future care. The motion was unanimously approved by the council, reflecting a strong commitment to enhancing the city’s approach to animal welfare and management. This contract not only facilitates the care of stray dogs but also positions Yakima to initiate further discussions around pet licensing and microchipping in the future.
