Animal Control Moves from Codes to Yakima Police Department

Yakima, WALocal News

As of 2023, the Yakima City Council has officially transferred Animal Control operations to the Yakima Police Department, a move aimed at enhancing local animal management services. This change allows for better coordination and response to animal-related incidents within the city. Residents are now encouraged to reach out to the Yakima County Sheriff Department for any animal-related calls outside the city limits, ensuring that all areas receive appropriate attention. Starting May 7, 2023, dog licensing will also be managed by the Code Administration, further consolidating animal-related services under local governance. The Yakima Police Department has established a dedicated contact number, (509) 575-6200, for residents needing immediate assistance with animal control issues.

This organizational shift is expected to improve efficiency and responsiveness in dealing with animal welfare matters. The Yakima Humane Society and other local organizations are likely to play a critical role in supporting these efforts. Overall, this transition reflects Yakima's commitment to fostering a safer and more organized approach to animal control within the community.
